who executed this monstrous conception, <strong>and</strong><br />

no attempt ei<strong>the</strong>r at expression or finish was<br />

made. The proportions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> human body<br />

are well preserved, but <strong>the</strong>re is no grace <strong>of</strong><br />

limb, no dignity <strong>of</strong> attitude, no approach even<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> semblance <strong>of</strong> a muscle in <strong>the</strong> uncovered<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> limbs. There <strong>the</strong>y sit, with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

h<strong>and</strong>s placed upon <strong>the</strong>ir knees, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir im-<br />

moveable faces expressive only <strong>of</strong> a s<strong>to</strong>ny calm<br />

but <strong>the</strong> effect produced by <strong>the</strong>m when all <strong>the</strong><br />

four were uncovered <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> pedestals, must have<br />

been stupendous indeed, for <strong>the</strong>y measure, as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y sit, from <strong>the</strong>ir feet <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> summit <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir mitres sixty-five feet ; <strong>and</strong> you may ima-<br />

gine what <strong>the</strong>ir bulk is, as it is proportioned<br />

<strong>to</strong> what <strong>the</strong>ir height would be st<strong>and</strong>ing. Be-<br />

tween <strong>the</strong>ir legs are placed smaller statues,<br />

pigmy-looking productions, which at first we<br />

believed <strong>to</strong> be about <strong>the</strong> average height <strong>of</strong> a<br />

man ; but upon <strong>the</strong> tallest person with us mea-<br />

suring himself with one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se figures, we<br />

found that it over<strong>to</strong>pped him by <strong>the</strong> head <strong>and</strong><br />

shoulders ; o<strong>the</strong>r statues <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same dimen-<br />

sions are placed between <strong>the</strong> colossi, <strong>and</strong>, com-<br />

pared with <strong>the</strong>m, have <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> pup-<br />

pets, for which we had mistaken <strong>the</strong>m until<br />
