Memlooks, having been <strong>to</strong>ld that <strong>the</strong> Pasha had<br />

withdrawn <strong>to</strong> his hareem, comprehended that<br />

it was time for <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> depart ; <strong>and</strong> consequently<br />

<strong>the</strong>y repaired <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> court <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> citadel, where<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were in <strong>the</strong> act <strong>of</strong> mounting <strong>the</strong>ir horses,<br />

when a murderous volley, fired on <strong>the</strong>m from<br />

every side, stretched many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m lifeless upon<br />
