tion <strong>of</strong> flat surface it possesses is literally covered<br />

with <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> travellers who have penetrated<br />

thus far in<strong>to</strong> <strong>Nubia</strong>—some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m celebrated<br />

ones in <strong>the</strong> annals <strong>of</strong> <strong>Egypt</strong>ian travel <strong>and</strong> re-<br />

search, such as Belzoni <strong>and</strong> Wilkinson — <strong>the</strong><br />

greater part English ; but among <strong>the</strong>m I found only<br />

two females who had preceded me <strong>the</strong>re, both <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m my countrywomen. ]My own name was <strong>of</strong><br />

course added <strong>to</strong> this primitive Livre des Voyageurs,<br />

<strong>and</strong>, that duty performed, we <strong>to</strong>ok our last look<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild cataract, <strong>and</strong> descended <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> spot<br />

where we had left our donkeys.<br />

On returning <strong>to</strong> Wadi Haifa, we found that<br />

during our absence <strong>the</strong> Dahabieh had undergone<br />

a complete metamorphosis, <strong>the</strong> main-mast having<br />

been struck <strong>and</strong> laid on <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cabins,<br />

<strong>the</strong> deck planks taken up <strong>to</strong> make room for <strong>the</strong><br />

rowers (for we are <strong>to</strong> be rowed do\^Ti <strong>the</strong><br />

stream), <strong>the</strong> kitchen removed, &c. &c. All this<br />

is prepara<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>to</strong> our descending <strong>the</strong> river, where<br />

sails would be worse than useless <strong>to</strong> us, <strong>and</strong> where<br />

we must depend upon <strong>the</strong> current <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> oars<br />

<strong>of</strong> our men <strong>to</strong> make head against <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rly<br />

winds. To-morrow we commence our return <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> L<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Egypt</strong>, but as we have all <strong>the</strong> tem-<br />

ples <strong>of</strong> Lower <strong>Nubia</strong> <strong>to</strong> visit in our progress
