mous wigs. The men are all armed with long<br />

spears ; h<strong>and</strong>-clubs made <strong>of</strong> wood beautifully-<br />

polished <strong>and</strong> as hard as iron, called Abanos ; long<br />

straight swords <strong>of</strong> a peculiar form widening <strong>to</strong>-<br />

wards <strong>the</strong> point, slung over <strong>the</strong>ir back ; small<br />

knives buckled round <strong>the</strong>ir left arm ; <strong>and</strong> large<br />

round bucklers with a boss in <strong>the</strong> middle, covered<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r with crocodile's skin or hippopotamus's<br />

hide. They are a fine, h<strong>and</strong>some, manly-looking<br />

race, <strong>and</strong>, although exceedingly dark, have no-<br />

thing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> negro in <strong>the</strong>m— on <strong>the</strong> contrary,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir heads are very finely formed, <strong>and</strong> present<br />

what phrenologists would term " well balanced<br />

crania."<br />

The hills on <strong>the</strong> western side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river, from<br />

Korosko <strong>to</strong> Wadi Haifa, are <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most whim-<br />

sical shape you can conceive ; a caprice <strong>of</strong> Nature,<br />

who, after having created such endless tracts <strong>of</strong><br />

mono<strong>to</strong>nous s<strong>and</strong>s, indulged herself in producing<br />

<strong>the</strong> contrast <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se extraordinary elevations.<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m are so exactly pyramidical in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

appearance, that at first I believed <strong>the</strong>y must have<br />

been constructions, instead <strong>of</strong> natural mounds.<br />

Might not <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se hills have origi-<br />

nally suggested <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> adopting a similar one<br />

in architecture *?<br />
