refused <strong>to</strong> rise until <strong>the</strong>ir bur<strong>the</strong>ns should be<br />

more equitably disposed <strong>of</strong>; <strong>and</strong> this, <strong>the</strong>ir firm<br />

determination, <strong>the</strong>y conveyed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir task-<br />

masters by sounds <strong>and</strong> gestures not <strong>to</strong> be mis-<br />

unders<strong>to</strong>od. It was evident from <strong>the</strong> various<br />

in<strong>to</strong>nations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cries <strong>the</strong>y uttered, beginning<br />

with a low plaintive grumble <strong>and</strong> ending in an<br />

angry growl, that <strong>the</strong>y had commenced by pity-<br />

ing <strong>the</strong>mselves for being overtasked, that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

<strong>the</strong>n remonstrated against <strong>the</strong> injustice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

blows that were inflicted upon <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> ended<br />

by angrily defying <strong>the</strong>ir tyrants <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong>m<br />

move ! And <strong>the</strong>y were right, <strong>the</strong> sagacious<br />

brutes !<br />

pers over <strong>the</strong> heaps <strong>of</strong> flat cakes <strong>of</strong> bread <strong>and</strong> ripe<br />

dates that were spread upon <strong>the</strong> ground before
