I shall preserve un<strong>to</strong>uched. Tliey are enclosed<br />

in ear<strong>the</strong>n vessels, exactly like a chimney-pot,<br />

<strong>the</strong> aperture <strong>of</strong> which is sealed up with a strong-<br />

cement; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> embalmed bird is rolled up in<br />

innumerable b<strong>and</strong>ages <strong>of</strong> linen, strongly impreg-<br />

nated with bituminous preparation. Although,<br />

upon taking <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong>se cerecloths, I found some<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> larger fea<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bones <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Ibis entire, <strong>the</strong> moment <strong>the</strong> air reached <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>the</strong>y crumbled in<strong>to</strong> dust. No traces <strong>of</strong> sacred<br />

writing, or <strong>of</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r emblem, did we discover<br />

in this mummy.<br />

The Pyramids <strong>of</strong> Sakkara lose very much upon<br />

being approached ; <strong>the</strong>ir size is by no means<br />

overwhelming, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are built in layers <strong>of</strong><br />

masonry <strong>of</strong> very rough construction, <strong>and</strong> bear<br />

no trace <strong>of</strong> ever having had a smooth outward<br />

casing. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m is in so degraded a con-<br />

dition, that it would be difficult <strong>to</strong> decide<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r it were a construction or a natural<br />

mound <strong>of</strong> s<strong>to</strong>nes. It looks like one <strong>of</strong> those<br />

primeval graves upon which every passer-by<br />

religiously casts a protecting s<strong>to</strong>ne, until <strong>the</strong> grey<br />

cairn swells in<strong>to</strong> a l<strong>of</strong>ty pile. And may not<br />

those rude cairns have first suggested <strong>the</strong> idea<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pyramids? I should say that those <strong>of</strong><br />
