which is at once male <strong>and</strong> female ; all <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>Egypt</strong>ian gods are only varied forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

two constituent principles—<strong>the</strong>y are merely pure<br />

abstractions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Great Being, These second,<br />

third, &c., forms establish an uninterrupted<br />

chain, which descends from Heaven <strong>and</strong> material-<br />

izes itself in<strong>to</strong> earthly incarnations <strong>and</strong> human<br />

shapes. The last <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se incarnations is that<br />

<strong>of</strong> Horus, <strong>and</strong> this last link <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> divine chain<br />

forms, under <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Horammon, <strong>the</strong> O <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> gods, <strong>of</strong> which Amnion Horus (<strong>the</strong> great<br />

Ammon, <strong>the</strong> active <strong>and</strong> generating spirit) is <strong>the</strong><br />

A. The starting-point <strong>of</strong> <strong>Egypt</strong>ian Mythology is<br />

a Triad, composed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three parts <strong>of</strong> Amnion<br />

Ra, viz. Ammon (<strong>the</strong> male <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r), Mouth<br />

(<strong>the</strong> female <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r), <strong>and</strong> Khons (<strong>the</strong><br />

son). This Triad, having manifested itself upon<br />

earth, is resolved in<strong>to</strong> Osiris, Isis, <strong>and</strong> Horus.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> parity was not complete, since Osiris <strong>and</strong><br />

Isis were bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> sister ; at Kalabschi, how-<br />

ever, <strong>the</strong> final Triad, that <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> three<br />

members resolved <strong>the</strong>mselves exactly in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

initial Triad, is completed : Horus <strong>the</strong>re bears<br />

<strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> his mo<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> son<br />

which his motjier Isis has borne <strong>to</strong> him, <strong>and</strong><br />
