hareem, a young slave whose beauty <strong>and</strong> accom-<br />

plishments had rendered her for awhile <strong>the</strong> chief<br />

These arrangements, startling <strong>to</strong> European<br />

<strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> favour, <strong>and</strong> forfeiture <strong>of</strong> advancement,<br />

which such an <strong>of</strong>fence as a rejection would entail<br />
