<strong>the</strong> police and several were injured and taken to SMC. Meanwhile, ga<strong>the</strong>rings<br />

continued at SMC.<br />

680. The Minister <strong>of</strong> Health, Dr Faisal Al Hammar, appeared on <strong>Bahrain</strong><br />

Television <strong>the</strong> same night, stating that <strong>the</strong> situation at SMC was calm and<br />

orderly, and that <strong>the</strong>re had been seven minor injuries. The <strong>Bahrain</strong> Medical<br />

Society and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bahrain</strong> Dentists’ Society issued a statement condemning <strong>the</strong><br />

use <strong>of</strong> violence against “peaceful protesters” and announced that a committee<br />

would be formed to document injuries and alleged crimes committed against<br />

doctors and medical personnel. They criticised <strong>the</strong> Minister <strong>of</strong> Health for his<br />

inaccurate statement regarding <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> injuries and called for his<br />

resignation. 281 Approximately 2,500 people ga<strong>the</strong>red at SMC. 282 According<br />

to SMC records, on 17 February 2011, 131 emergency crisis patients<br />

presented at SMC and 89 patients were admitted, with 41 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se admissions<br />

being related to <strong>the</strong> protests. 283<br />

681. According to SMC records, on 18 February 2011, 61 emergency<br />

crisis patients presented at SMC and 66 patients were admitted, with 11 <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se admissions being related to <strong>the</strong> protests. 284<br />

682. Crowds continued to congregate at SMC on 19 February 2011.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> crowds were media personnel, who continued to have easy access<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Emergency Section and freely filmed footage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> arrival <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

injured and conducted interviews throughout. Protesters marched towards <strong>the</strong><br />

GCC Roundabout, where <strong>the</strong>y were joined by a group <strong>of</strong> medical personnel.<br />

A new medical tent was set up at <strong>the</strong> roundabout, run by doctors and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

medical personnel many <strong>of</strong> whom worked at SMC. Security forces withdrew<br />

from <strong>the</strong> roundabout. According to SMC records, on 19 February, 64<br />

emergency crisis patients presented at <strong>the</strong> Emergency Section and 44 patients<br />

were admitted, with one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se admissions being related to <strong>the</strong> protests. 285<br />

Official records for <strong>the</strong> period from 14 to 19 February 2011 showed that <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were 114 cases <strong>of</strong> gas inhalation, 103 cases <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t tissue injury, 11 cases <strong>of</strong><br />

muscular skeletal injury, one injury by gunshot wound, 53 injuries caused by<br />

shotgun wounds and 27 o<strong>the</strong>r cases, amounting to a total <strong>of</strong> 309 cases. 286<br />

683. On 20 February 2011, a march organised by medical personnel and<br />

comprising several hundred people left from SMC and headed to <strong>the</strong> GCC<br />
