CASE NO. 53<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 26 August 2011<br />

Statement: The detainee was arrested on 7 April 2011 from his house in <strong>the</strong><br />

El Manama area by a group <strong>of</strong> persons with <strong>the</strong>ir heads covered. They woke<br />

him up and humiliated him in front <strong>of</strong> his mo<strong>the</strong>r and wife. When his fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

tried to intervene, <strong>the</strong>y threatened him by raising <strong>the</strong>ir weapons towards his<br />

head. The detainee was blindfolded and his hands were tied behind his back.<br />

He was transferred to an unknown place where he was beaten and kicked in<br />

<strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> his body, especially <strong>the</strong> buttocks, and slapped forcefully on his<br />

eardrums (telefono). They also humiliated him by defaming his religious<br />

beliefs and threatening him and his family. His cell was unhygienic and he<br />

was not permitted to access <strong>the</strong> toilet. He was hung up and beaten on <strong>the</strong><br />

soles <strong>of</strong> his feet (falaka) to force him to confess that he had tried to kill an<br />

Asian man and organised ga<strong>the</strong>rings and protests. He was <strong>the</strong>n transferred<br />

to ano<strong>the</strong>r place where he was beaten with a hose in addition to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

forms <strong>of</strong> beatings described. Lastly, he was referred to Dry Dock Detention<br />

Centre where he was forced to sign a confession in front <strong>of</strong> an interrogator.<br />

He saw his family for <strong>the</strong> first time in three months during his military trial<br />

at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> May 2011. The conditions <strong>of</strong> detention <strong>the</strong>n started to improve.<br />

He was transferred to a larger cell, different types <strong>of</strong> humiliations stopped<br />

and he was allowed to call his family regularly. He now suffers from<br />

psychological problems as a result <strong>of</strong> his treatment in prison.<br />

CASE NO. 54<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 27 August 2011<br />

Statement: The detainee was arrested on 17 March 2011 by a group <strong>of</strong><br />

persons with <strong>the</strong>ir heads covered. They took his mobile phone and laptop<br />

and beat him by slapping, punching, kicking and using cables. He was<br />

blindfolded and his hands were cuffed behind his back. He was transferred<br />

to an unknown place where he was placed in a small, isolated cell.<br />

The next day, he was transferred to a military facility where he remained for<br />

two weeks. He was beaten in <strong>the</strong> following areas <strong>of</strong> his body: front and back<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head; eardrums (telefono); sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body; and front and back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

body and trunk (especially chest and abdomen). He was also kicked in <strong>the</strong><br />

buttocks. He was subjected to religious humiliation and threats to himself<br />

and his family, including threats <strong>of</strong> sexual abuse. The conditions in his cell<br />

were unhygienic and he was not permitted to access <strong>the</strong> toilet. He was<br />
