Annex B — Summary <strong>of</strong> Torture Allegations<br />

The detainee was transferred to Al Qurain Prison where he experienced<br />

various forms <strong>of</strong> mistreatment, including <strong>the</strong> following: standing for long<br />

periods; kicking and beating on his ears and back; beating using a hose;<br />

limited access to a toilet; poor meals; and mouldy pillows and sheets. He<br />

was detained in Al Qurain Prison for one and a half months and <strong>the</strong>n brought<br />

before <strong>the</strong> National Safety Court, which sentenced him to seven years<br />

imprisonment.<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 7 August 2011<br />

Statement: On 10 March 2011, <strong>the</strong> detainee was participating in a peaceful<br />

protest in Sitra village when he was arrested by persons in plain clo<strong>the</strong>s.<br />

The detainee at first believed <strong>the</strong>m to be civilian thugs but later discovered<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y were police <strong>of</strong>ficers in plain clo<strong>the</strong>s. They took him to an open<br />

area near his village where he saw 30 members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> riot police in police<br />

cars. They began to beat, torture and sexually assault him. They also<br />

threatened to kill him. They beat him all over his body with <strong>the</strong>ir rifles until<br />

<strong>the</strong> bones in his wrist became visible. His nose was also broken.<br />

Throughout <strong>the</strong> beatings, <strong>the</strong>y insulted him and his sect. The detainee<br />

fainted and was <strong>the</strong>n transferred to <strong>the</strong> BDF Hospital where he remained for<br />

one day. He was physically tortured and verbally insulted in <strong>the</strong> hospital.<br />

The detainee was <strong>the</strong>n taken to Isa Town police station where he was<br />

tortured on a daily basis. During <strong>the</strong> first five days <strong>of</strong> his detention, he was<br />

tied to a chair and denied any food or water. He was tortured while in <strong>the</strong><br />

chair and forced to sign a confession. He fainted several times as a result <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> torture. His torturers routinely insulted his sect and forced him to praise<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Bahrain</strong>i leadership. He was denied any visitations or telephone calls to<br />

his family.<br />

He was released on 31 May 2011. He lost his left eye and sustained a<br />

broken jaw and a break in his left leg as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se events, and he still<br />

has trouble moving his hands and feet.<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 25 August 2011<br />

Statement: The detainee was arrested at approximately 12:00 on 18 April<br />

2011 by plain clo<strong>the</strong>s security forces. He was taken to Riffa police station<br />

where five riot police <strong>of</strong>ficers beat him with a hose on his hands and back<br />

for two hours. He was <strong>the</strong>n taken to a room <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Military Prosecution<br />

where a prosecutor examined his wounds and demanded that <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />
