it. On <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> his detention, ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ficer approached <strong>the</strong> detainee<br />

and asked him about Iran. The <strong>of</strong>ficer pointed his gun at <strong>the</strong> witness’s head<br />

and stated, “We have <strong>the</strong> right to shoot anyone we want. I will empty this<br />

gun in your head.” He <strong>the</strong>n called in ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>ficer and <strong>the</strong> two began to<br />

beat and kick <strong>the</strong> detainee.<br />

The detainee remained in detention until 4 July. He could not write his<br />

statement due to <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> pellets in his fingers.<br />

CASE NO. 28<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 17 August 2011<br />

Statement: At approximately 16:00 on 18 February 2011, <strong>the</strong> detainee was<br />

taking part in a peaceful protest in <strong>the</strong> Qufool area at <strong>the</strong> GCC Roundabout<br />

when military forces began shooting at <strong>the</strong> protesters. He witnessed <strong>the</strong><br />

death <strong>of</strong> one protester. He sustained injuries to his left thigh and left leg and<br />

was taken by ambulance to SMC. He was taken to <strong>the</strong> operating <strong>the</strong>atre and<br />

remained in <strong>the</strong> hospital from 18 February until 17 March. SMC was<br />

attacked on 16 March and masked commandos raided <strong>the</strong> witness’ room.<br />

They stole items such as a laptop and phone, and pointed a gun at <strong>the</strong><br />

detainee while questioning him. Riot police <strong>the</strong>n entered and insulted him<br />

and took him to <strong>the</strong> sixth floor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hospital. He remained <strong>the</strong>re for two<br />

weeks and was <strong>the</strong>n transferred to Ward 63 and forbidden from contacting<br />

his family. Masked security forces near <strong>the</strong> door prevented him from free<br />

movement and denied him any visitors. These forces beat him and once<br />

placed a shoe in his mouth.<br />

On 3 April, <strong>the</strong> detainee was released from SMC and taken to Naim police<br />

station, at which point he was permitted to contact his family for <strong>the</strong> first<br />

time. He was blindfolded, insulted and beaten with a hose, including on his<br />

feet, until he made a confession. He was in severe pain and was transferred<br />

on 7 April to Dry Dock Detention Centre, where he remained until 10 July.<br />

He was refused medical attention during this time. He was taken to a<br />

military court on 21 July and denied <strong>the</strong> charges against him, which included<br />

assembly and attacking security personnel.<br />

CASE NO. 29<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 25 August 2011<br />

Statement: The detainee was arrested on 15 March 2011 at a checkpoint on<br />

his way to fill his car with petrol. During <strong>the</strong> arrest, he was “beaten all over<br />

his body”, kicked in his side and in his face. He sustained a bleeding head<br />

injury caused by blunt trauma with a metal rod. This caused dizziness but<br />
