<strong>Report</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bahrain</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inquiry</strong><br />

Statement: At approximately 01:00 on 6 April 2011, a group <strong>of</strong> masked<br />

men surrounded <strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> witness’ uncle and broke down <strong>the</strong> front<br />

door. The detainee heard <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> men entering <strong>the</strong> home and<br />

attempted to escape via <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>. The masked men threw him to <strong>the</strong> floor<br />

and kicked him on various parts <strong>of</strong> his body. He sustained a shoulder injury,<br />

which continued to cause him pain for <strong>the</strong> following three months. His<br />

uncle was also arrested.<br />

Following his arrest, <strong>the</strong> detainee was blindfolded and taken to an<br />

interrogation centre where he was exposed to severe beatings and whipping<br />

for four days. On <strong>the</strong> second day <strong>of</strong> his detention, his hands were tied and<br />

he was hung in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rooms and beaten with a hose on his legs. The<br />

injuries and bruises from this beating were visible for three months after his<br />

arrest. On <strong>the</strong> fourth day, he was transferred to <strong>the</strong> BDF Hospital and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

subsequently to Al Qurain Prison where he was repeatedly subjected to<br />

verbal insults and beatings.<br />

CASE NO. 22<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 3 August 2011<br />

Statement: The detainee was arrested during <strong>the</strong> night at his fa<strong>the</strong>r’s home<br />

by masked security forces who broke down three doors in <strong>the</strong> home. After<br />

verifying <strong>the</strong> witness’s identity, <strong>the</strong> security forces hit him in <strong>the</strong> neck,<br />

causing him to lose his breath for some time, and threw him onto his<br />

stomach. They broke family photographs and <strong>the</strong>n entered his sister’s<br />

bedroom and terrorised <strong>the</strong> family. The detainee was placed in a car and<br />

taken to <strong>the</strong> MoI interrogation centre. He and his sect were continuously<br />

insulted on <strong>the</strong> way and he was told that <strong>the</strong> Shia traitors would be sent to<br />

Iraq and Iran.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> interrogation centre, <strong>the</strong> detainee was forced to stand outside and<br />

when he complained <strong>of</strong> feeling faint his head was placed in a garbage bin.<br />

After some time, he was taken to a cell and told to continue standing. His<br />

clo<strong>the</strong>s were ripped <strong>of</strong>f and he was beaten with a hose. He spent six days at<br />

<strong>the</strong> centre, during which time he was frequently beaten. On <strong>the</strong> sixth day, he<br />

was transferred to Al Qurain Prison and <strong>the</strong>n to a different location where he<br />

was videotaped making a forced confession. After three hours <strong>of</strong> standing<br />

he was allowed to sit and eat, but he was not allowed to pray.<br />

At approximately 10:00 a man came and asked <strong>the</strong> detainee if he went to <strong>the</strong><br />

GCC Roundabout and <strong>the</strong> detainee responded affirmatively. He <strong>the</strong>n asked<br />

if <strong>the</strong> detainee practised mutaa (temporary marriage) and he responded<br />

negatively. The interrogator asked if temporary marriage was practised at<br />
