would not see his family and sexual threats were made against his wife and<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r. He was released on <strong>the</strong> sixth day.<br />

The detainee was arrested again on 4 May and released on 10 July for<br />

charges including breaking into a building at <strong>the</strong> university, beating students,<br />

trying to overthrow <strong>the</strong> GoB and participating in an assembly <strong>of</strong> more than<br />

five people. He was subjected to beatings and electric shocks, he was<br />

strapped to a chair and beaten on <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> his feet (falaka), and forced<br />

headfirst into a toilet. The conditions were harsh and unhygienic. He was<br />

forced to sign a confession while he was blindfolded and unable to read <strong>the</strong><br />

three pages <strong>of</strong> charges.<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 24 August 2011<br />

Statement: The detainee is aphasic and <strong>the</strong>refore cannot speak to<br />

investigators. During <strong>the</strong> interview he raised his fingers towards his son<br />

asking him to provide <strong>the</strong> information and consented by moving his head<br />

about <strong>the</strong> information supplied by his son. The witness’ son stated that <strong>the</strong><br />

detainee was arrested on 16 March 2011 when police <strong>of</strong>ficers saw him<br />

wearing <strong>the</strong> specific clothing and covering his head with <strong>the</strong> specific dress<br />

belonging to his religious group. There was no arrest warrant. He was<br />

kicked and beaten with fists, iron bars and wooden planks. He was beaten in<br />

<strong>the</strong> following areas <strong>of</strong> his body: front and back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head; eardrums<br />

(telefono); sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body; arms and legs; and front and back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body<br />

and trunk (especially <strong>the</strong> chest and abdomen). He was taken to <strong>the</strong> police<br />

station where <strong>the</strong> beatings continued. He was <strong>the</strong>n transferred by an<br />

ambulance to <strong>the</strong> MoI Hospital but <strong>the</strong> personnel <strong>the</strong>re refused to accept <strong>the</strong><br />

case.<br />

At 07:00 on 17 March 2011, he was dropped semiconscious in front <strong>of</strong><br />

SMC. He was suffering from paralysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> right upper and lower limbs,<br />

pain in <strong>the</strong> hip joints and a total inability to speak. His family did not have<br />

any information about him from 20 March until 10 April.<br />

CASE NO. 46<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 27 August 2011<br />

Statement: On 1 April 2011, a group <strong>of</strong> persons arrested <strong>the</strong> detainee at his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r’s house and humiliated him in front <strong>of</strong> his family. They blindfolded<br />

him and cuffed his hands behind his back. They beat him with <strong>the</strong>ir hands<br />

and fists, kicked his body and hit him forcefully around <strong>the</strong> ears (telefono).<br />
