<strong>the</strong> MoH, stated that he did not witness discrimination in <strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong><br />

patients by doctors. 362<br />

751. The doctor referred to in paragraphs 743 and 744 denied <strong>the</strong><br />

allegations ei<strong>the</strong>r that he mishandled <strong>the</strong> patients or that he ordered <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

transfer to BDF hospital. A resident dentist stated that he worked under <strong>the</strong><br />

authority <strong>of</strong> this doctor and that <strong>the</strong> doctor never asked him not to treat a<br />

particular patient and that he never saw him discriminate against any<br />

patients. 363 An SMC surgeon gave a statement to similar effect. He fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

stated that he saw this doctor treat a <strong>Bahrain</strong>i police <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> Syrian descent.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r doctor stated that he received a call from <strong>the</strong> parents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> police<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer, at which point he went to see him in <strong>the</strong> Emergency Section and<br />

reviewed <strong>the</strong> related medical reports. The doctor stated that <strong>the</strong> police<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer’s health was stable and he told him that his parents had been asking<br />

about him. 364<br />

752. A resident trainee doctor at SMC stated that she did not witness any<br />

discrimination against patients. 365 She stated that protesters were extremely<br />

angry at <strong>the</strong> expatriates brought in on 13 March 2011 because expatriates were<br />

attacking protesters and perhaps working for <strong>the</strong> national security forces. The<br />

doctors were trying to protect <strong>the</strong> wounded expatriates and keep <strong>the</strong> protesters<br />

away from <strong>the</strong>m. There is a video <strong>of</strong> an injured person <strong>of</strong> Asian background<br />

with a head wound being brought into SMC on 13 March, which shows him<br />

being treated by medical personnel. 366<br />

753. According to <strong>the</strong> statement submitted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> by <strong>the</strong><br />

accused medical personnel:<br />

On 13 March 2011, all patients who came to A&E were treated by<br />

<strong>the</strong> doctors present regardless <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir sect or nationality. This is<br />

witnessed by doctors involved in <strong>the</strong> treatment as well as staff<br />

nurses present at <strong>the</strong> hospital on that day. We would also like to<br />

bring to <strong>the</strong> attention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> <strong>the</strong> testimony before <strong>the</strong><br />

court <strong>of</strong> [<strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emergency Section] delivered while<br />

under <strong>the</strong> oath. [It is important] to note that [<strong>the</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Emergency Section] was called as a prosecution [witness]. 367<br />

754. The Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emergency Section testified that on that day 16<br />

expatriates were transferred from SMC to BDF hospital to receive <strong>the</strong><br />

necessary treatment and that none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se individuals were held at SMC<br />

against <strong>the</strong>ir will. In addition, <strong>the</strong>re was one expatriate who had suffered a<br />

fracture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> right shoulder and was operated upon by one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accused<br />

doctors and ano<strong>the</strong>r doctor.<br />
