SIR NIGEL RODLEY KBE<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world’s foremost experts on torture and international human<br />

rights law, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Sir Nigel Rodley KBE has extensive experience<br />

working on <strong>the</strong>se issues, most notably as <strong>the</strong> United Nation’s Special<br />

Rapporteur on Torture and as member and Vice-Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations<br />

Human Rights Committee.<br />

In 1973, Sir Nigel became <strong>the</strong> first Legal Adviser <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International<br />

Secretariat <strong>of</strong> Amnesty International, a position he held until 1990. In 1990<br />

he was appointed as Reader in Law at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Essex and since<br />

1994 he has been Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Law at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Essex. Sir Nigel has<br />

been <strong>the</strong> Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Human Rights Centre at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Essex since<br />

2004. He has also taught international law and o<strong>the</strong>r subjects at Dalhousie<br />

University, <strong>the</strong> New School <strong>of</strong> Social Research and <strong>the</strong> London School <strong>of</strong><br />

Economics and Political Science.<br />

In 1993 Sir Nigel was designated Special Rapporteur on Torture by <strong>the</strong> UN<br />

<strong>Commission</strong> on Human Rights, serving in this capacity until 2001. Since<br />

2001 he has been a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UN Human Rights Committee, including<br />

periods as Vice-Chair. He was elected a <strong>Commission</strong>er <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International<br />

<strong>Commission</strong> <strong>of</strong> Jurists in 2003 and is a member <strong>of</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> its British<br />

Branch, JUSTICE. He is a Trustee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Medical Foundation for <strong>the</strong> Care<br />

<strong>of</strong> Victims <strong>of</strong> Torture.<br />

Sir Nigel was awarded a KBE in <strong>the</strong> 1998/99 New Year’s Honours List, “for<br />

services to human rights and international law”. He received an honorary<br />

LLD from Dalhousie University in 2000 and in 2005 received, jointly, <strong>the</strong><br />

American Society <strong>of</strong> International Law’s Goler T. Butcher medal for<br />

“outstanding contributions to … international human rights law”.<br />

Sir Nigel has authored or edited six books on international law and<br />

international human rights law, as well as numerous book chapters, journal<br />

articles and shorter works.<br />
