<strong>Report</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bahrain</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inquiry</strong><br />

The detainee was held at a police station for 16 days. He was accused <strong>of</strong><br />

running over police <strong>of</strong>ficers with a car and he was threatened into<br />

confessing. Initially, he was not permitted to access a toilet, forcing him to<br />

urinate on himself. He was not given water. He was beaten with a metal rod<br />

and his right arm was broken. He was denied medical care for seven or<br />

eight days, when he was taken to hospital for an X-ray and casting. He<br />

received threats to his parents. He was given electric shocks to his left ankle<br />

three or four times and cigarette burns to his arms. Cold water was poured<br />

on him and he experienced cold air conditioning. He fainted three or four<br />

times and water was poured on his face to revive him. He sustained a knee<br />

injury from <strong>the</strong> beatings and was taken to hospital for an X-ray and given<br />

bandages.<br />

The detainee was <strong>the</strong>n transferred to Dry Dock Detention Centre where he<br />

remained for 10 days. He sustained an injury to his left shoulder from being<br />

beaten with sticks. He was taken to a police station for 11 days and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

returned to Dry Dock for ano<strong>the</strong>r five days, during which time he was<br />

blindfolded. Next, at a military prison, he was beaten on <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> his<br />

feet with a hose. His feet became swollen and red, and <strong>the</strong>n turned black<br />

and blue. A doctor gave him ice. Finally, at Juw Prison, he was convicted<br />

<strong>of</strong> murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was beaten on his first<br />

day <strong>the</strong>re and subsequently following family visits.<br />

Statement: On 17 March 2011, <strong>the</strong> detainee was walking by a protest while<br />

leaving a sporting club when he was shot with buckshot/birdshot. He<br />

sustained injuries to his legs, arm and head, in particular to his right hip. He<br />

was taken to hospital and given treatment. He was beaten in <strong>the</strong> hospital<br />

(slapped and kicked), resulting in bruising, and he was verbally abused.<br />

On 18 March, he was arrested at <strong>the</strong> hospital and taken to <strong>the</strong> police station<br />

for three days. He was blindfolded and handcuffed, and <strong>the</strong>n forced to stand<br />

all night against a wall. He was beaten with a hose on his back and was in<br />

extreme pain from <strong>the</strong> beatings and buckshot wounds, but was not given<br />

medication. He was <strong>the</strong>n taken to a second police station for about five<br />

hours, where he was slapped, kicked, verbally abused and forced to insult his<br />

parents. Next, he was taken to a police station used for investigations and<br />

detained for five days. He was hung by his wrists from <strong>the</strong> ceiling and<br />

forced to sign a confession that he had not read. He was beaten, causing his<br />

buckshot wounds to bleed and become a lot more painful. He was hit in his<br />

genitals and urinated blood immediately afterwards.<br />

The detainee was transferred to a prison where he remained for about one<br />

month. He was forced to stand against <strong>the</strong> wall while blindfolded and<br />

beaten, and he was prevented from praying. He was <strong>the</strong>n detained in Dry<br />
