Jin%oism in thA Boor War.<br />

To a great extent Imperialist feeling during the<br />

first year <strong>of</strong> the Boer liar can be , described an jin<strong>go</strong>ism<br />

in that it was extreme, intolerant <strong>of</strong> opposition and<br />

highly emotional. It centred on patriotic demonstrations<br />

and the breaking up <strong>of</strong> pence meetings, - many <strong>of</strong> them<br />

meetings held by Crouwright-Schreiner during hie tour<br />

<strong>of</strong> Britain. There were also celebrations <strong>of</strong> British<br />

victories, - Ladysmith on 2nd March,, Mafeking on 18th<br />

- 20th May and Pretoria on 5th June. Contemporaries<br />

regarded such <strong>ac</strong>tivities as something quite unique and<br />

exceptional, - though' they had begun in a small way<br />

after the Jameson Raid, and could be soon in the Uolson<br />

day rejoicingu in October 1898, They were rooted in<br />

the build up <strong>of</strong> militaries in Boys Brigades, Primrose<br />

League branches, music hall entertainment and the<br />

attitudes <strong>of</strong> the popular press.<br />

They were also developed by the excit enta <strong>of</strong> the<br />

first months <strong>of</strong> the war, - the dopartuua <strong>of</strong> troops, the<br />
