The Society believed that the African slave trade was<br />

increasing; more frequent reports from missionaries and<br />

explorers were re<strong>ac</strong>hing Englands and the Arabs had begun<br />

to penetrate the interior <strong>of</strong> Africa, from the co<strong>ac</strong>t, Interest<br />

in the Sudan had been generated by the anti-ulavo trade<br />

work <strong>of</strong> Samual Baker and Gordon who had, <strong>ac</strong>ted in the 1870'ä<br />

an Governor Generale in the service <strong>of</strong> the Egyptian authorities.<br />

Both Allen and Wailer were friends <strong>of</strong> Gordon, and urged<br />
