The humanitarians also approved <strong>of</strong> the protectorate<br />

over Zanzibar <strong>ac</strong>quired in 1890 after an agreement with<br />

Germany to exchange Zanzibar for Heli<strong>go</strong>land, and finally to<br />

delimit British and German spheres <strong>of</strong> influence in East<br />

Africa. The Government had for some time been under<br />

pressure from the philanthropists to abolish slavery in<br />

Zanzibar<br />
