The Company certainly tried to persuade the Government<br />

that the overwhelming majority <strong>of</strong> opinion in the country<br />

was in favour <strong>of</strong> keeping Uganda. In November M<strong>ac</strong>kenzie<br />

left a pamphlet at the foreign Office coitiining preen<br />

cuttings, and explaining, "that the vast preponderanci <strong>of</strong><br />

opinion in favour <strong>of</strong> retention was not owing to any bins<br />

in the selection% but to the small number <strong>of</strong> opinions<br />

expressed on the other side. "<br />
