Zwo doubt come Liberals were disinclined to vote<br />

against their own party for fear that this would weaken<br />

the Governments But there had been much more Liberal<br />

opposition to a Liberal Government in 1883, over the wer<br />

in the Sudan. But Uganda seems to have been something<br />

<strong>of</strong> a turning point for the Liberal attitude to Imperialism.<br />

W. S. Blunt wrote "the question <strong>of</strong> ev<strong>ac</strong>uating or retaining<br />

Uganda was one <strong>of</strong> critical importance with the Liberal<br />

Party, for it involved the whole question <strong>of</strong> extending or<br />

limiting British Imperial responsibilities in Africa. "<br />

from that <strong>of</strong> the Conservatives$ - continuity <strong>of</strong> Foreign<br />

Policy had been <strong>ac</strong>hieved, The Uganda experience enabled<br />

retentionista like Arthur Silva White <strong>of</strong> the Scottish<br />
