the signal for the att<strong>ac</strong>k; the Conservative Club<br />

which was also a working een0a club, raised a subscription<br />

to help the defendants who wore arrested after the riot.<br />

The only person finally committed to the quarter<br />

Sessions was a clerk who admitted having been in the<br />

Conservative Club previous to the demonstration; a<br />

labourer wan also brought to trial but not convicted.<br />

At the trial <strong>of</strong> the clerk, the jury could not decide<br />

whothcr the assembly had boon riotous or not, and the case<br />

wan dismissed.<br />

(There were no Stratford men on<br />

the jury). A Birmingham paper claimed that a momber<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Conservative Club was in constant cos unication<br />

with the defence solicitor.<br />

The victims were<br />

Liberals. This disturbance could be tr<strong>ac</strong>ed to<br />

Conservative organisation.<br />
