The LibornTh and the 1900 ons<br />

The Liberals did not fare as catantrophically<br />

in the Genoral Election <strong>of</strong> October 1900 as they may<br />

have feared. They dada a net lose <strong>of</strong> only two aeato.<br />

After the Election Conservatives and Liberal Unionists<br />

together hold four hundred and one coats, Liberals<br />

and Labour one hundred and eighty seven and Irish<br />

ttationalista eighty two.<br />

The Conservatives<br />

gained thirty five seats and the Liberals thirty-throe<br />

(excluding Ireland where two Nationalist Caine balanced<br />

two Unionist ones).<br />

The two parts <strong>of</strong> the<br />

country whore the Liberals lost most heavily were<br />

Scotland and the north-east<br />

(Northumblerland and<br />

Durham). The Conservatives made a not gain <strong>of</strong> six<br />

seats in Scotland where the Liberals were traditionally<br />

Liberal loaders especially bemoaned the disaster in<br />
