The fall <strong>of</strong> Khartotim wue the signal'for the<br />

Sudan in 1884. The suspense <strong>of</strong> a year's waiting and the<br />

tension <strong>of</strong> the additional nix days from 5th February to 11th<br />

February when hic death was finally confiroed, culminated in<br />

an outburst <strong>of</strong> sentimental eulogy. A biographer <strong>of</strong> Gordon<br />

wrote, .. "such days were like a lifetimo <strong>of</strong> anxiety, and<br />

every fresh addition <strong>of</strong> the papera, every $crop <strong>of</strong> news, was<br />

read with an eagcrneoa which proved that General Gordon<br />

was not only a hero to be admired, but a man to be loved. " (3)<br />
