The memory <strong>of</strong><br />

Gordon "almost dominated the rieoting.. E. A. Stuart rousod<br />

the meeting to the utmost enthusiasm by advocating a Gordon<br />

Memorial Mission to the Soudan. There had boon no thought<br />

<strong>of</strong> this kind-in the mind <strong>of</strong> the committee; but there wao<br />

no resisting the cpontanooum burst <strong>of</strong> approval fron all<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> the country... " (2)<br />

The committee in f<strong>ac</strong>t, on<br />

circularising its supporters, found that there was great<br />

interest in the Misoionf and a fund was Startod.<br />

February 1886 this seemed to have re<strong>ac</strong>hed about $00,<br />

mainly collected by local associations, Caxbj'td, ro,, Bath<br />

and Tunbridge Walla figured largely in the t. ub<strong>ac</strong>ription<br />

lists; there were also substantial contributions fron<br />

private individuals belonging to the C. H. S.<br />
