(I)<br />

The immediate problem<br />

for the missions and Company wan that the Portuguese<br />

hindered the transport <strong>of</strong> weapons and ammunition along<br />

the Zambesij which were required for the Arab war. A<br />

number <strong>of</strong> resolutions re<strong>ac</strong>hed the Foreign Office urging<br />

the Government to influence Lisbon to allow the transit <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>go</strong>ods and weapons; the: Scottich Geographical. Socioty and<br />

the U. M. C, A, joined in those requests.<br />

The question <strong>of</strong><br />

a charter for the Company was brought up again, but the<br />

Foreign Office was not particularly impressed by the Nyasa<br />

interests.<br />

All that the Government could suggest was<br />

that the ex<strong>ac</strong>t amount <strong>of</strong> armaments must be specified and the<br />
