Eriin Pasha was a German (his real name was Eduard<br />

Schnitzer) who had boon appointed to rule Equatorial<br />

Province by the Egyptians, and who since the Mahdist revolt<br />

had been in an isolated and dangerous position. The Foreign<br />

Office had connidered the poaaibility <strong>of</strong> an <strong>of</strong>ficial rescue<br />

expedition in September 1886, but the idea was rejected as<br />

too dancerouo and impr<strong>ac</strong>ticabl&.<br />
