This<br />

was eosontially a humanitarian plan, designed as much for<br />

the welfare <strong>of</strong> the tribes an for pr<strong>of</strong>it. There was also<br />

after the full <strong>of</strong> Khartoum a growing interest by a-group <strong>of</strong><br />

people, previously intorested in the Con<strong>go</strong> trade, (see<br />

below).<br />

But the Chambers <strong>of</strong> Conmarcct though concerned<br />

over the West African and Con<strong>go</strong> trade in 1884, were not<br />

much interested in the Sudan. They had not even showed<br />

much concern over Egypt in 1882, although events in Egypt<br />

had greater economic implications because <strong>of</strong> the trade<br />

route through the Canal and the cotton trade. But only<br />

a few references to Egypt were =ado by Chambers in 1882,<br />

though trade with Spain on the other hand won being very<br />

oxtennively discussed at thin time. At Glas<strong>go</strong>w in August<br />

came firms connected with ate= navigation to the Lasts<br />

expressed concern over the Suez Canal.<br />
