There was however an equal certainty in 1898 and 1899<br />

that Britain would be victorious in any war on which<br />

ehe embarked. To some extent the opposition to the<br />

procpoct <strong>of</strong> a South African War implied an attempt to<br />

set b<strong>ac</strong>k on some <strong>of</strong> the old anti-Imperialist linos.<br />

But even the anti-war party in 1899 had absorbed a<br />

<strong>go</strong>od many Imperial attitudes. Only a section <strong>of</strong> them<br />

could be termed anti-Imperialist. The rent were merely<br />

differentiated by thinking that Imperial interests did<br />

not justify a war.
