Government was hold to have imposed on Britain.<br />

The League overlapped with the Patriotic<br />

Association in membership and included a <strong>go</strong>od many<br />

Conservative M. pn. In 1884, it wan attempting to secure<br />

signatures to petitions caking for the rescue <strong>of</strong> Gordon.<br />

The n: tention <strong>of</strong> all Imperialists was occupied in trying<br />

to prosaurige the Government into sending a Gordon relief<br />

expedition to the Suden. In February 1884, the Patriotic<br />

Association organised a London meeting at the Guildhall,<br />

After a requisition containing ten thousand names had been<br />

presented to i t . fowler, the Lord Mayor, by a deputation<br />

led by Ashmead Bartlett.<br />
