London Junior Liberal Clubs which illustrate Liberal attitudes*<br />

They comprise coven from the London region, two from Scotland,<br />

one from Wales from Merthyr Tydfil (no doubt influenced by<br />

henry Richard), two from Yorkshire, three from Lancashire# two<br />

from the Midlands and one from couthern England (Southanpton).<br />

They almost all combined a vote <strong>of</strong> confidence in the Government<br />

with a request for the abandonment <strong>of</strong> the Sudan campaigns and<br />

were cautious about critidaing<br />

first resolution on E, rpt and the Sudan passed by a general<br />

meeting <strong>of</strong> Leicester Liberals) r- ".. this Association whilot<br />

regretting the necessity for the military operationo in the<br />

Soudan, and expressing its admiration <strong>of</strong> the gallant conduct<br />

<strong>of</strong> the troops$ <strong>ac</strong>suron Mr Gladstone and the Government <strong>of</strong> its<br />

confidence and support in the present crisis# and heartily<br />

approves <strong>of</strong> their determination to withdraw the troops at the<br />

earliest possible moment,, "<br />

Though Liberals were treading<br />

very carefully to avoid'embarr<strong>ac</strong>aing-the Governments it was<br />

obvious that they had no liking for the Sudan campaign. A much<br />
