In Manchester there were two Conservative meetings<br />

in February and May 1M. Large numbers <strong>of</strong> people wire<br />

reported to have been prosont at e<strong>ac</strong>h meeting. The first<br />

was invaded by a few , Radicals who tried to put an amendment<br />

but failed.<br />

At the second meeting the resolutions<br />

were moved by A. Balfour M. P. and E. Gibson M. P. and the<br />

Tim on n admitted that "the proceedings were under avowedly<br />

Conservative auspices. "<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> Conservative Clubs and associations<br />

including Uorkingten'a Clubs passed resolutions denouncing<br />

the apathy <strong>of</strong> the Government in delaying to rescue Gordon,<br />

Lord Saliobury in mid-February, was replying to several <strong>of</strong><br />

these.<br />

which arrived at the Foreign Office woro cent from Conservative<br />

organioutiono.<br />
