one man, who does all the work connected with the
handling of the cars going out and coming back.
What pumping is necessary in this fairly drymine
is done by five electrically driven Deming
single-acting triplex pumps, Fig. 4, made by The
Deming Co., of Salem, 0. These
have 5 (_-inch plungers, working an
8-inch stroke, with a capacity of
about 150 gallons per minute at 60
r.p.m. The motor is mounted on
the one-piece base of the pump,
making the whole a self-contained
unit, with double-reduction gear
drive. This is a very popular type
of pump, of which the 5%x8 is a
very popular size. There are so
many Deming pumps handling the
mine waters of this country that to
name the type and size, with show
of Fig. 4 for identification, is sufficient
description of the pumping
equipment at tbe Bergholz operation.
The coal—No. 6 seam—has a
variable thickness, running as low
as 32 inches over considerable
areas, and as high as 40 inches in
rare spots. It is low coal, therefore,
and has to be mined and
handled accordingly. For cutting it, there have
been used both low and standard types of breast
machines, and more recently the shortwall type,
which has naturally proved best of all—the really

practical machine, best adapted to the conditions
of this and similar mines.
The old breast machines are still used some in
narrow work in development.
Six shortwall machines are in service, five Goodmans
of most recent purchase and one other
which was first installed and never duplicated.
The cutting is fairly clean but very hard, calling
for utmost ruggedness and endurance in machines
to operate successfully and stand up to the work
without frequent trips to tbe daylight for repaii s.

This requirement for stand-up-to-it-iveness is the
very reason why the Goodman machine has qualified
and been adopted. Figs. 5 and 6 show the
machines in various regular operations.
