1.0 INTRODUCTION<br />

The Purpose and Layout of this Guide<br />

The Lead<strong>in</strong>g Practice Susta<strong>in</strong>able Development Program <strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>itiative was a<br />

collaborative effort launched <strong>in</strong> 2006 by the Australian government and the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry. The handbooks built on the then state-of-the-art knowledge and case<br />

studies conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong>al Best Practice Environmental Management <strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

(BP) series of booklets launched <strong>in</strong> 1995. Although <strong>in</strong> some areas the content is<br />

dated, the BP series still provides excellent supplementary and background read<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong> the Lead<strong>in</strong>g Practice series.<br />

The Lead<strong>in</strong>g Practice Program aimed <strong>to</strong> identify the key issues affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>susta<strong>in</strong>able</strong><br />

<strong>development</strong> <strong>in</strong> the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry and provide <strong>in</strong>formation and case studies <strong>to</strong><br />

enable a more <strong>susta<strong>in</strong>able</strong> basis for its operations. The output of the Program was<br />

a series of handbooks relevant <strong>to</strong> all stages of a m<strong>in</strong>e’s life—exploration, feasibility,<br />

design, construction, operation, closure and rehabilitation as illustrated <strong>in</strong> Figure 1.2.<br />
