M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the resource efficiently. The m<strong>in</strong>e utilised six different<br />

underground m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g methods some of which were truly <strong>in</strong>novative,<br />

such as the Vertical Crater Retreat and Undercut and Fill methods.<br />

The emphasis was on extract<strong>in</strong>g as close <strong>to</strong> 100% of the ore body<br />

as possible, as the metal grades were exceptionally high.<br />

High environmental standards. The community surrounded the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

operation and thus it was <strong>in</strong> its <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>to</strong> protect the environment. It<br />

was one of the first <strong>in</strong> Australia <strong>to</strong> have its own nursery for tube s<strong>to</strong>ck for<br />

m<strong>in</strong>e rehabilitation. It also provided free plants <strong>to</strong> employees. One of its<br />

employees, (Albert Morris), <strong>in</strong> the 1930s, created a green belt surround<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the m<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>to</strong> repair the damage caused by timber gett<strong>in</strong>g for m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

and smelt<strong>in</strong>g and also <strong>to</strong> repair the effects of over-graz<strong>in</strong>g by sheep.<br />

The sum <strong>to</strong>tal of these <strong>in</strong>itiatives was a m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g field with exceptional longevity,<br />

staffed by a loyal, committed workforce liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a city with amaz<strong>in</strong>g amenities<br />

consider<strong>in</strong>g its isolation, with a very stable population base.<br />
