Airborne Contam<strong>in</strong>ants, Noise and Vibration (referred <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong> the text as LP ACNV)<br />

This handbook addresses issues related <strong>to</strong> emissions of particulates (dust, diesel and<br />

silica), noise and vibration and how they are controlled at m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g operations. These<br />

issues can have a significant impact on local communities and contribute <strong>to</strong> concerns<br />

about ongo<strong>in</strong>g environment and health risks.<br />

Biodiversity Management (LP Biodiversity)<br />

This handbook addresses the broad issue of biodiversity management for m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

operations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g environment protection and conservation legislation, flora and<br />

fauna and environmental offsets. M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g often occurs <strong>in</strong> or near sensitive natural<br />

environments, so biodiversity protection needs <strong>to</strong> be a key part of the operation’s<br />

environmental management program.<br />

Community Engagement and Development (LP Community)<br />

This handbook addresses some of the key issues around these processes <strong>in</strong> the<br />

m<strong>in</strong>erals sec<strong>to</strong>r, offer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sights, approaches and practical discussion about the<br />

challenges that companies may encounter as they engage with local communities<br />

and seek <strong>to</strong> contribute <strong>to</strong> their short and long-term <strong>development</strong>. The handbook is<br />

supported by case studies that illustrate how these challenges have been addressed<br />

<strong>in</strong> particular contexts.<br />

Cyanide Management (LP Cyanide)<br />

Manag<strong>in</strong>g cyanide <strong>to</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imise risks <strong>to</strong> human health and environmental health<br />

represents one of the key challenges fac<strong>in</strong>g the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry. This handbook<br />

addresses pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and procedures for effective and safe cyanide management. The<br />

handbook takes a risk management approach and is closely based upon the <strong>lead<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

<strong>practice</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciples conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the International Cyanide Management Code (the<br />

Code).<br />

Evaluat<strong>in</strong>g Performance: Moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g and Audit<strong>in</strong>g (LP Moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g)<br />

This handbook addresses the ongo<strong>in</strong>g impact of all stages of a resource project from<br />

<strong>in</strong>itial plann<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>development</strong> and operation, <strong>to</strong> closure and rehabilitation.<br />

It <strong>in</strong>cludes requirements for an environmental impact assessment for a project,<br />

<strong>development</strong> and implementation of environmental management systems,<br />

performance, moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g and audit<strong>in</strong>g, all of which contribute <strong>to</strong> the company’s<br />

social licence <strong>to</strong> operate.<br />

Hazardous Materials Management (LP Hazardous)<br />

This handbook outl<strong>in</strong>es the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>to</strong> manage hazardous materials <strong>in</strong> the<br />

m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry. A hazardous material can be def<strong>in</strong>ed as ‘any material (biological,<br />

chemical, physical) which has the potential <strong>to</strong> cause harm <strong>to</strong> humans, animals, or<br />

the environment when it is improperly handled, used, treated, s<strong>to</strong>red, disposed<br />

of or otherwise managed’. Any po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> the lifecycle or supply cha<strong>in</strong> can <strong>in</strong>clude a<br />

hazardous material.<br />
