Upon completion of the study, researchers were awarded additional funds<br />

from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research <strong>to</strong> share research f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

with various stakeholders; with<strong>in</strong> the population health field this process<br />

is known as Knowledge Translation (KT). Study <strong>in</strong>dica<strong>to</strong>rs identified the<br />

Northern BC coal m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g community of Tumbler Ridge <strong>to</strong> be particularly<br />

vulnerable <strong>to</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g impacts. As such, researchers developed a KT plan<br />

<strong>to</strong> share research f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs with municipal, health service, and m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

representatives from this community. Overall objectives of the KT strategy<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded highlight<strong>in</strong>g the importance of community health <strong>to</strong> the regional<br />

<strong>to</strong>wards <strong>susta<strong>in</strong>able</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. A diverse array of KT strategies were undertaken<br />

and <strong>in</strong>cluded: the <strong>development</strong> of a research summary report that highlighted<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> study f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> non-technical language; the presentation of research<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs at a regional coal m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g conference; and the facilitation of a M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

and Community Health workshop that brought <strong>to</strong>gether for the first time<br />

the municipality, health service providers, and the local m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>to</strong><br />

discuss research f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, evaluate the research summary report, and <strong>to</strong><br />

discuss the <strong>development</strong> of a community susta<strong>in</strong>ability plan. As a result, the<br />

research summary report has been widely distributed and is available onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g ongo<strong>in</strong>g collaborative relationships <strong>to</strong> further apply the<br />

research evidence. In addition, the importance of the research f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />

recommendations has garnered <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>terest from stakeholders associated<br />

with another, newly approved BC m<strong>in</strong>e project.<br />

Hurrell <strong>in</strong> 2009. M<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and Community Health workshop participants were asked <strong>to</strong> evaluate a draft of the summary<br />

report <strong>to</strong> ensure clarity of research f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs and applicability and relevance of associated recommendations. The f<strong>in</strong>al<br />
