Product stewardship<br />

This is perhaps the best known form of stewardship, is a product-centred approach <strong>to</strong><br />

protect<strong>in</strong>g human health and the environment. It aims <strong>to</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imise the net environmental<br />

impact from product use, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g its manufactur<strong>in</strong>g; distribution; servic<strong>in</strong>g; and endof-life<br />

management; through product and product system design as well as regula<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

controls and provision of appropriate management <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>to</strong> all who come <strong>in</strong> contact.<br />

This is a product-focused approach that attempts <strong>to</strong> build engagement throughout the<br />

value cha<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g with cus<strong>to</strong>mers. Under a broader scheme of Product Responsibility,<br />

or Stewardship, other stakeholders (partners) who would share responsibility <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

consumers (responsible use and disposal of the material) and recyclers or waste managers<br />

who deal with products at end of life.<br />

Propagule<br />

Any structure hav<strong>in</strong>g the capacity <strong>to</strong> give rise <strong>to</strong> a new plant, whether through sexual<br />

or asexual (vegetative) reproduction. This <strong>in</strong>cludes seeds, spores, and any part of the<br />

vegetative body capable of <strong>in</strong>dependent growth if detached from the parent.<br />

Provision<br />

A f<strong>in</strong>ancial accrual based on a cost estimate of the closure activities.<br />

Public health risk<br />

The likelihood of harm <strong>to</strong> public health.<br />

Quality assurance<br />

Ensur<strong>in</strong>g the quality of a process, for example construction, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the documentation<br />

and report<strong>in</strong>g of test work.<br />

Raw water<br />

Water that has not passed through a site water task, such as ra<strong>in</strong>fall<br />

Reactive waste<br />

Waste that reacts on exposure <strong>to</strong> oxygen.<br />

Reagent recovery<br />

Capture of process<strong>in</strong>g chemicals from the tail<strong>in</strong>gs stream.<br />

Recalcitrant species<br />

Species that are difficult <strong>to</strong> re-establish.<br />

Receiv<strong>in</strong>g environment<br />

The receiv<strong>in</strong>g environment that surrounds and is downstream (or down aquifer) of an<br />

operation’s lease.<br />

Reclamation<br />

Treatment of previously degraded and often contam<strong>in</strong>ated land <strong>to</strong> achieve a useful purpose.<br />

Often used outside Australia <strong>in</strong>stead of rehabilitation.<br />

Red mud residue<br />

A by-product of the production of alum<strong>in</strong>a from bauxite.<br />
