Understand<strong>in</strong>g the site, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g its dra<strong>in</strong>age characteristics, is also required<br />

when design<strong>in</strong>g and sit<strong>in</strong>g components of the m<strong>in</strong>e operation. By transferr<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation <strong>to</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g software, the m<strong>in</strong>e planners have detailed computer modell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of the orig<strong>in</strong>al site and its dra<strong>in</strong>age patterns <strong>to</strong> make decisions about res<strong>to</strong>ration or<br />

alteration <strong>in</strong> its f<strong>in</strong>al design.<br />

Like all computer-related technology, <strong>development</strong>s occur and become outdated<br />

quickly. Therefore, the pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> digitis<strong>in</strong>g and analys<strong>in</strong>g the data are<br />

more important than the specific software packages used. End uses for the f<strong>in</strong>al void<br />

result<strong>in</strong>g from m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g operations also require consideration and plann<strong>in</strong>g. Backfill<strong>in</strong>g<br />

may be uneconomic <strong>in</strong> some operations but, <strong>in</strong> others, plann<strong>in</strong>g might avert creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

any void. Safety is also crucial and creative design <strong>in</strong> conjunction with substantial<br />

obstacles and warn<strong>in</strong>gs are needed.<br />

Poorly rehabilitated m<strong>in</strong>es provide a difficult legacy issue for governments,<br />

communities and companies, and ultimately tarnish the reputation of the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry as a whole. Increas<strong>in</strong>gly, as access <strong>to</strong> resources becomes tied <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry’s<br />

reputation, effective closure processes and satisfac<strong>to</strong>ry m<strong>in</strong>e rehabilitation become<br />

critical <strong>to</strong> a company’s ability <strong>to</strong> develop new projects. Poor plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>variably<br />

<strong>in</strong>creases the costs of rehabilitation and m<strong>in</strong>e closure and decrease overall<br />

profitability. Tak<strong>in</strong>g a more <strong>in</strong>tegrated approach <strong>to</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e rehabilitation, and do<strong>in</strong>g it<br />

progressively, can achieve effective m<strong>in</strong>e rehabilitation.<br />
