Regardless of the project phase (exploration through <strong>to</strong> operations) there are a<br />

number of issues <strong>to</strong> consider when develop<strong>in</strong>g a moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g program. Typical<br />

elements of an AMD moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g program, dur<strong>in</strong>g exploration/feasibility and<br />

operations, are outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the Lead<strong>in</strong>g Practice handbook on Manag<strong>in</strong>g Acid and<br />

Metalliferous Dra<strong>in</strong>age. However, moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g programs need <strong>to</strong> be site-specific and<br />

take <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> consideration the phase of project <strong>development</strong> and the sensitivity of the<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g environment and community. Other key po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>to</strong> consider are:<br />

The nature of the material be<strong>in</strong>g handled, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g volumes and reactivity.<br />

Likely composition of leachate generated from the material.<br />

Likely downstream recep<strong>to</strong>rs and basel<strong>in</strong>e concentrations of significant analytes.<br />

Turnover of material <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g rate and the ability<br />

of personnel <strong>to</strong> access the material.<br />

Sampl<strong>in</strong>g technique, preparation and preservation requirements.<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of sample <strong>in</strong>tegrity and cha<strong>in</strong> of cus<strong>to</strong>dy.<br />

Reference <strong>to</strong> appropriate <strong>guide</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e limits.<br />

Turnaround times for both the material be<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>ed and analyses. If<br />

the turnaround of material be<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>ed is relatively short, then analysis<br />

techniques need <strong>to</strong> be applied which allow for a rapid turnaround of data.<br />

Representative sample size.<br />

Government regulations and licens<strong>in</strong>g requirements.<br />

The moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g program should provide <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>to</strong> facilitate <strong>lead<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>practice</strong><br />

AMD management <strong>in</strong> the short and long term. It is essential that moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g data<br />

are usable and that a solid communication forum exists between environmental<br />

moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g staff and site planners and managers. Careful <strong>in</strong>terpretation of<br />

moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g results is also critical for the ongo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>development</strong> and implementation<br />

of an AMD Management Plan. If management <strong>practice</strong>s are not effective then actions<br />

need <strong>to</strong> be taken <strong>to</strong> rectify the situation before long term impacts arise. A quick<br />

resolution will often prevent excessive acidification before it becomes impractical<br />

or cost prohibitive. Education and <strong>in</strong>volvement of the workforce is essential <strong>to</strong> the<br />

successful management of AMD issues.<br />

The benefit and importance of gather<strong>in</strong>g an extensive sulphur and multi-element<br />

database from drill core dur<strong>in</strong>g early stages of project <strong>development</strong> is clearly<br />

illustrated from Rio T<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong>’s Sari Gunay project <strong>in</strong> Iran. A resource model database<br />

consist<strong>in</strong>g of more than 15,000 sulphur and elemental assays on one metre <strong>in</strong>tervals<br />

of drill core was compiled dur<strong>in</strong>g exploration, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies.<br />

These data identified the presence of sulphur with<strong>in</strong> waste rock and ore as an issue<br />

for the project because of the potential for generation of acid rock dra<strong>in</strong>age and<br />

contam<strong>in</strong>ation of water resources (LP AMD p.33).<br />
