In January 2011, the PNG government announced K6 million (approximately<br />

$2.3 million AUD) <strong>to</strong> fund detailed studies on <strong>susta<strong>in</strong>able</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g activities for<br />

the people and local bus<strong>in</strong>esses of Misima. The aim of these studies was <strong>to</strong><br />

develop a long-term <strong>development</strong> plan for Misima from which project fund<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and implementation will be based. Possible projects be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestigated<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude cultivat<strong>in</strong>g cash crops, a solution that is currently hav<strong>in</strong>g limited<br />

success <strong>in</strong> Bouga<strong>in</strong>ville.<br />
