support and on site accommodation and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> local farmers and<br />
employees wish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> improve their farm<strong>in</strong>g skills and <strong>practice</strong>s. Upon<br />
completion of the course, each participant was assisted with seed, fertilizer<br />
and technical advice for two plant<strong>in</strong>g seasons. Farmer groups were also<br />
established <strong>to</strong> provide ongo<strong>in</strong>g support <strong>to</strong> village farmers. Post m<strong>in</strong>e closure<br />
the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g centre has been converted <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> an Agricultural High School<br />
with board<strong>in</strong>g facilities which currently has over 100 students enrolled from<br />
surround<strong>in</strong>g villages who are complet<strong>in</strong>g a nationally recognized 3 year<br />
course for Senior High School.<br />
In addition <strong>to</strong> the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g centre, KEM <strong>in</strong> cooperation with local farmers also<br />
supported the establishment of approximately 450 ha of rice plant<strong>in</strong>gs prior<br />
<strong>to</strong> the closure of the operation. There was considered necessary due <strong>to</strong> high<br />
risk of food shortages which were predicted <strong>to</strong> occur around closure due<br />
<strong>to</strong> the dependency on m<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>come and decrease <strong>in</strong> rice farm<strong>in</strong>g which had<br />
occurred dur<strong>in</strong>g the operation of the m<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
A post closure Endowment Trust Fund of US$13.4M has been established <strong>in</strong> an<br />
off-shore account <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore which generates approximately US$600,000<br />
per year. This fund is used <strong>to</strong> support the ongo<strong>in</strong>g activities associated with<br />
moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of permanent m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g-associated structures with<strong>in</strong><br />
Protected Forest and also <strong>to</strong> provide ongo<strong>in</strong>g adm<strong>in</strong>istrative and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
support <strong>to</strong> the Agricultural High School. It is <strong>in</strong>tended that these funds will<br />
operate <strong>in</strong> perpetuity <strong>in</strong> accordance with the agreements and governance<br />
arrangements negotiated by the M<strong>in</strong>e Closure Steer<strong>in</strong>g Committee.<br />
