The Morwell River Diversion project guarantees the life of TRUenergy Yallourn’s m<strong>in</strong>e<br />

for at least 30 more years by provid<strong>in</strong>g short and long-term accessibility <strong>to</strong> critical<br />

coal reserves thereby ensur<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued supply of a major portion of the Vic<strong>to</strong>rian<br />

and national electricity supply. The follow<strong>in</strong>g economic, social and environmental<br />

outcomes were achieved:<br />

Works on the diversion provided more than 150 construction<br />

jobs over the period 2001 <strong>to</strong> 2005 <strong>in</strong>clusive.<br />

Without the diversion, the cost of electricity generation<br />

would have significantly <strong>in</strong>creased.<br />

Under the Native Title Agreement established, a number of local<br />

Aborig<strong>in</strong>al elders were engaged as cultural observers.<br />

The diversion has delivered significant environmental improvements,<br />

compared with the orig<strong>in</strong>al design, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g two kilometres<br />

of orig<strong>in</strong>al river flood pla<strong>in</strong> and ephemeral wetlands.<br />
