High rate thickener<br />

A thickener through which a slurry is passed at a high rate, with limited residence time,<br />

allow<strong>in</strong>g a high flocculant dose.<br />

Hydraulic conductivity<br />

Otherwise known as (water) permeability; a measure of the ability of a porous material <strong>to</strong><br />

pass water.<br />

Hydraulic backfill<br />

Fill that is placed as a fluid.<br />

Hydroseed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Spray<strong>in</strong>g a mixture of paper or straw mulch, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g seed, fertiliser and a b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g agent,<br />

on<strong>to</strong> a slope which is <strong>to</strong>o steep or <strong>in</strong>accessible for conventional seed<strong>in</strong>g techniques.<br />

Inactive site<br />

A m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g or m<strong>in</strong>eral process<strong>in</strong>g area which is currently not be<strong>in</strong>g operated but which is still<br />

held under some form of title. Frequently such sites are referred <strong>to</strong> as be<strong>in</strong>g under ‘care<br />

and ma<strong>in</strong>tenance’.<br />

Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUA)<br />

ILUAs are used <strong>to</strong> negotiate with Indigenous people with native title <strong>in</strong>terests regard<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

do<strong>in</strong>g of acts affect<strong>in</strong>g native title. Under the Native Title Act, a registered ILUA is legally<br />

b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g on all people who hold native title over the agreement area, whether or not they<br />

are party <strong>to</strong> the agreement.<br />

Interested party<br />

A person, group or organisation with an <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the process of, or outcome of, m<strong>in</strong>e<br />

closure.<br />

The owner of freehold land, the holder of leasehold land, or any person or body who<br />

occupies or has accrued rights <strong>in</strong> freehold or leasehold land.<br />

Best available current <strong>practice</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>susta<strong>in</strong>able</strong> <strong>development</strong>.<br />

Licence-<strong>to</strong>-operate<br />

The permission government gives <strong>to</strong> the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>to</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e and produce m<strong>in</strong>erals<br />

from specific operations through formal legislative and legal agreements.<br />
