Net present value (NPV)<br />
Net present value or NVP is a measurement used <strong>to</strong> decide whether <strong>to</strong> proceed with an<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment. It is calculated by add<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>gether all the expected benefits and subtract<strong>in</strong>g all<br />
the expected costs from the <strong>in</strong>vestment, now and <strong>in</strong> the future. If the NVP is negative, then<br />
the <strong>in</strong>vestment cannot be justified by the expected returns. If the NVP is positive, then it<br />
can be justified f<strong>in</strong>ancially.<br />
Non-government organisations (NGOs)<br />
A non-profit group or association organised outside <strong>in</strong>stitutionalised political structures <strong>to</strong><br />
realise particular social objectives (such as environmental protection) or serve particular<br />
constituencies (such as Indigenous peoples). NGO activities range from research,<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation distribution, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, local organisation, and community service <strong>to</strong> legal<br />
advocacy, lobby<strong>in</strong>g for legislative change, and civil disobedience. NGOs range <strong>in</strong> size from<br />
small groups with<strong>in</strong> a particular community <strong>to</strong> huge membership groups with a national or<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational scope.<br />

Operational risks are those risks that are focused on address<strong>in</strong>g aspects of an operation<br />
which may be more systemic <strong>to</strong> the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g process and the day-<strong>to</strong>-day operation of a m<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

An abandoned m<strong>in</strong>e for which a responsible party no longer exists or can be located.<br />
