Belém é famosa por suas praças, que muitos consideram das mais bonitas do Brasil. Espaços públicos por excelência, de trocas simbólicas entre a população, as praças de Belém continuam representando um ideal urbano de melhor qualidade de vida. Por isso, a cidade ganha cada vez mais esses espaços. Embora os bairros da periferia tenham hoje a maior quantidade de praças, as mais antigas, localizadas na área do Centro Histórico, continuam sendo as principais referências coletivas. A PRAÇA DAS ARMAS Quando os portugueses desembarcaram pela primeira vez na verdadeira Amazônia, seus temores do desconhecido certamente estavam à flor da pele. Suas largas experiências nos mares e nas terras de então traziam-lhes a certeza da necessidade imediata de proteção e abrigo. AS <strong>PRAÇAS</strong> The Town Squares Belém is famous for its town squares, considered by many the most beautiful in Brazil. Public spaces par excellence, where symbolic exchanges happen, Belém’s squares still stand for the urban ideal of a better quality of life. That is the reason why the city keeps creating more and more of those spaces. Even though most of the squares lie in the suburban neighborhoods, the older ones, located in the Historical Downtown, are still the most important collective references. ARMAS SQUARE When the Portuguese landed on true Amazonian land for the first time, they were certainly brimming with fear of the unknown.
