Os Largos 78 The Largos O LARGO <strong>DE</strong> SÃO BRAZ De todos os espaços surgidos na cidade que podem ser denominados largos ou praças, o Largo de São Braz foi o de maior tamanho — cerca de 25 campos de futebol —, hoje já totalmente descaracterizado devido à sua ocupação desordenada por prédios públicos, privados e pequenas regiões abertas que se tornaram praças com nomes diferentes. Na sua ampla área foi construído o Terminal Rodoviário (antiga estação da Estrada de Ferro de Bragança) com praça frontal chamada “do Operário”; o Memorial Magalhães Barata com a Praça da Leitura; um conjunto habitacional para os servidores do antigo IAPI; e frontal ao belo Mercado de São Braz, a Praça Floriano Peixoto. Na Praça Floriano Peixoto, em homenagem promovida pelo governo do Pará a Lauro Sodré (1858-1944) — primeiro governador republicano do LARGO <strong>DE</strong> SÃO BRAZ Of all the urban spaces deserving the name of largos or squares ever created in Belém, Largo de São Braz was the largest – its area roughly equals that of 25 soccer fields. It is now virtually unrecognizable, due to the disorderly occupation by public and private buildings, and by the small open areas that became town squares with different names. Several buildings were raised in its extensive area: the Terminal Rodoviário (Central Bus Station, formerly a railway station of the Bragança Railroad), with the “Praça do Operário” (Worker’s Square) in front of it; the Magalhães Barata Memorial, with the Praça da Leitura (Reading Square); a residential development for the employees of the former IAPI; and, facing the beautiful Mercado de São Braz (São Braz Market), the Floriano Peixoto Square. On the Floriano Peixoto Square, as a tribute to Lauro
Pará – , foi erigido um conjunto escultórico composto de uma estátua do político abrigada numa cobertura de granito e concreto, um palanque político em granito negro com figuras frontais, e uma coluna em granito vermelho com fixação na lateral superior de uma escultura representativa da liberdade. Sodré (1858-1944), Pará’s first republican governor, the state government commissioned a sculpture ensemble composed of a statue portraying the politician placed under a granite and concrete casing; a political podium in black granite decorated with frontal figures; and a red granite column supporting a Largo de São Braz.
