Praça Visconde do Rio Branco. A secular Igreja das Mercês domina o entorno. Visconde do Rio Branco Square. Predominando na sua lateral, vê-se a imponente Igreja das Mercês e uma amostra significativa do casario do Brasil Império. Esse local foi testemunha de importantes lutas do movimento da Cabanagem, principalmente por nele se localizar, à época, ao lado da igreja, o Trem de Guerra, onde era armazenado o armamento das forças legalistas. Os moradores de sua periferia nos dias de hoje são muito poucos, o que torna sua utilidade como diversão ou lazer quase nenhuma. Sua situação no velho centro comercial levou-a a uma degradação de uso pelos muitos vendedores ambulantes que ali estabeleceram seus pontos de venda. A estátua em bronze dedicada ao Dr. José da Gama Malcher é obra do escultor belga Armand-Pierre Cattier, sendo assentada em pedestal de pedra. Foi inaugurada em 1889. On one of its sides, the majestic Church of Mercês stands out, along with a significant sample of houses from the Brazilian Empire period. This place witnessed several battles during the Cabanagem Rebellion, mostly because the War Train, where the legalist forces’ weaponry was stored, was located next to the church. Very few people live in the neighboring areas nowadays, so the square is now practically useless as an entertainment or leisure area. Located right amid the old commercial center, it is now quite degraded, due to the many street vendors who set up shop on the square. Location: Santo Antônio Street, in front of the Church of Mercês. Borough: Campina (Comércio). The bronze statue on a stone pedestal dedicated to Dr. José da Gama Malcher was made by Belgian sculptor Armand-Pierre Cattier. It was inaugurated in 1889.
