A partir de 1626, no Largo
de São João, de caráter
altamente festivo, iniciou-se a
promoção dos portugueses em
24 de junho, com enorme
adesão dos tupinambás, que
participavam com grande
alegria em meio à animação
com fogueiras, danças e,
certamente, atrevimentos
alcoólicos.
Houve, portanto,
coincidência entre o propósito
católico de atrair os índios ao
convívio missionário catequético
e as práticas rituais indígenas,
simbolizadas pelas fogueiras de
São João. Talvez seja por causa
disso que os festejos juninos
tenham tomado a proporção e a
importância que ganharam no
calendário festivo.
No Largo da Misericórdia,
freguesia da Campina, hoje
Praça Barão do Guajará,
atendendo a pedido do
então capitão-mor do
Grão-Pará, Aires de Sousa
Chichorro, foi instituída pela
Confraria da Misericórdia a
promoção que vigorou por
muitos anos da Festa da
Padroeira, em 13 de
dezembro de 1650. Como
toda festividade religiosa de
tradição portuguesa,
In 1626, at Largo de São
João Batista, the Portuguese
started to promote the highly
cheerful June 24th festival,
with the massive participation
of the tupinambá Indians,
who enthusiastically joined in
the merrymaking, with its
bonfires, its dances, and,
certainly, its alcoholic
excesses.
The Catholic intention of
luring the Indians into the
circle of missionary catechism,
therefore, coincided with the
native ritual practices,
symbolized by the Saint John
bonfires. That may be the
reason why the June festivals
attained such proportions and
so much importance in the
calendar of festivities.
At Largo da Misericórdia, in
the borough of Campina
(currently Barão do Guajará
Square), at the request of the
then Captain-major of
Grão-Pará, Aires de Sousa
Chichorro, the Confraria da
Misericórdia (Brotherhood of
Mercy) instituted, on December
13th, 1650, the celebrations of
the Festa da Padroeira (Patron
Saint Festival), that continued for
